Mesilau Nature Park

Mesilau Nature Park is situated on the south eastern corner of Mount Kinabalu on the Pinosok Plateau at an altitude of 1951 metres. It is within the boundaries of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Kinabalu National Park and is 15km from the park headquarters and from Kota Kinabalu, the state capital of Sabah in Malaysian Borneo; it is a 2.5 hour drive.

It is a great place to escape the hot tropical sun due to the cooler climate (17 degrees Celsius during the day and 10 degrees Celsius at night).  The vegetation at Mesilau Nature Park is different than most tropical forests and results in sparsely spaced tree concentration it has a greater variety of ferns, fruiting shrubs, mosses, orchids, rhododendrons and the infamous carnivorous pitcher plant ,the Nepenthes Raja, are much more prevalent in this evergreen environment. It is primarily an oak and chestnut forest with large conifers in between that are thickly covered with moss and climbing bamboo. In between ginger plants are scattered everywhere and the flowers attract several species of bees, five out of eight species of bees in the world are found in Mesilau Nature Park.

In and around Mesilau Nature Park are several good nature trails like the Kogonon Trail and the Nepenthes Raja Trail, both which take about 30 minutes to complete.  The variety of bird life at Mesilau is astounding and presents many photo opportunities.

At the Mesilau Nature Park there is the Mesilau Summit Trail that is an alternative starting point for those who wish to climb up Mount Kinabalu. This trail is a far less trodden path than the Timpohon Path; it was opened to climbers in 1998 and was initially used by scientists and researchers. Mesilau Trail is longer by 2km and offers a vertically uneven trail compared to that of the Timpohon Summit Trail, but offers more flora views.
At Mesilau Nature Park there are several options for accommodation ranging from simple dormitory style up to more luxurious chalets and lodges that can sleep up to six people. The Mesilau Nature Resort was constructed in 1998. It is set in virgin tropical rainforest and the eco-friendly resort boasts magnificent views of the Mesilau Pinnacles of Mount Kinabalu while the Mesilau River runs swiftly past
