Mount Kinabalu (4,095 m), is highest mountain between the Himalayas and New Guinea and, therefore the highest in South East Asia. The mountain is famous for its many carnivorous plants and orchids, most notably Nepenthes rajah or giant pitcher plant capable of holding up to 3 liters of water. This is the only species that has been documented as actually having caught a rat in nature. The mountain is also home to a multitude of endemic animal species, including the Kinabalu Giant Red Leech and Kinabalu Giant Earthworm. With increasing popularity and accessibility of the park, accommodation can be fully booked for certain parts of the year, so it is important to book well in advance. To truly appreciate you stay at mount Kinabalu and Kinabalu Park it is recommended to spend 3 days and 2 nights at the mountain. You can stay in Kinabalu Park HQ on the first night and Laban Rata on the second night. Laban Rata is the accommodation near the peak of Mt. Kinabalu, Located at 3,000 meter featuring heated accommodation and a restaurant. Kinabalu Park HQ is the usual place where you would start you climbing journey. It is the place for registration and meting your guide and porter if necessary. |
